[It's late. Most occupants of the hideaway are asleep. Save for a few lingering souls twiddling away the late hours of the night over one last beer or song.
Joshua can't seem to find sleep at this hour either. Maybe restlessness or maybe something else. He sits there alone at one of the tables. Looking out at the night stars twinkling above... Counting each one. His drink is completely untouched and forgotten.]
[ Most occupants, yes. Clive, on the other hand, doesn't fall into that category. Many a night he does not, often finding himself lost in thoughts. Doubts. Uncertainties. Worries about the future, if he is truly doing the right thing when so many seem to suffer immediate consequences for actions he has decided on their behalf.
Some nights it is nightmares. Long passed are the ones of that night that have changed their lives and put them on this course, but of all the things that he's had to do simply to survive to this day.
Such moments would take him outside his door, overlooking the hideaway in general. The sound of the blighted waters were close enough to those of the pristine oceans. Echoes of the night at least seem to put his mind at ease, for the time being. However, tonight he senses that he is not alone in his restlessness. Clive's feet take him from his quarters and down to the tables.
Spotting Joshua, Clive puts his hands on his hips. No doubt his brother will know that he, too, is awake. There is little hiding from one another now. There is no longer any desire to as Clive crosses the distance and takes a seat across from the his taller sibling. ]
Molly is going to be quite upset if you waste her stores with a cup left half full.
[There was a time when Joshua only had solitary thoughts. Lonely and empty things drifted through his mind as he crossed the country with Jote. When he was alone in every other sense and the Undying weren't watching from far away.
But those times seem to be very much over now. Being surrounded by people almost every single day here in the hideaway now is a blessing. At first, it was a little difficult to get used to the noise but now that he has he quite likes it. It reminds him of times when people would be gathered in the yard for all matters of things in Rosaria.
Yet... He might still jump just slightly when his brother joins him.]
Brother. You're still awake.
[He smiles slightly and then frowns down at his untouched drink.]
... I've never quite gotten used to the burn it leaves on my throat, to be honest.
[ For years now he's known, in his heart, that Joshua had survived. That he had lived on, though apart from him. It had broken his heart, yes, knowing that Joshua had elected to remain at a distance. Though he knows why now, it had been a bitter medicine to take. At least now they stand side by side to face what may yet come. Clive is awash by emotion every time he looks upon his younger brother and sees him.
Whole. Alive. But still unable to eat carrots and as stubborn as a Big Horn about taking his own medicine. ]
All the better for it, really. I'm sure you've seen what Gav is like when he is well into his cups.
[ To have a conversation. To be able to actually be together. It is a blessing that he never wants to overlook. And Clive will be the Shield he had always meant to be. ]
[It had broken Joshua's heart to be so far apart from his older brother as well. And while he had his reasons, his goals, it hadn't made it any less easy. But now that they are together again Joshua wonders if he should have come to his brother earlier than he had.
That feeling he gets when his brother looks at him with that long-lost fondness, though. He smiles.]
I know all too well. The last time there was a round of drinks here I was certain he was singing all versions of the chocobo medley he could think of. On repeat. [He sighs.] And I do believe that round of drinks was all thanks to you.
[It is good to have a conversation with Clive again. Although they may be grown adults now and it's lost the innocence they used to have. Finding a moment to bring up something like that is good. But it might also add to a bit of Joshua's uneasiness.]
As for my thoughts... I was only thinking of how lively this place has been even in these darker days. And I can't help wondering if I might not exactly ... fit in.
[ If Joshua were to ask Clive's opinion on the matter, the older sibling would tell him that too much time had been wasted apart. The caged Ultima inside of Joshua hadn't truly been a reason to keep his distance, not when it is clear that doing so hadn't hindered the creature's work.
Seeing Joshua smile, even if it is wane or uneasy, brings a rare one to Clive's own features. That is only one of the looks that Clive had sworn to protect. Joshua truly has grown to be a fine young man. ]
Aye, it might've been at that. It surely seemed to raise the Hideaway's spirits, if not injure their ears simultaneously.
[ He remembers it quite well. Gav doesn't really hold his alcohol well, even though he likes to say he does. Rather, it seems he doesn't quite know his own limitations. Perhaps he simply doesn't care. Either way, everyone had quite the good time that day.
Which makes him wonder why Joshua believes that he doesn't fit in. ]
If you believe that, then you and I must both "not exactly fit in."
[ Lest Joshua forget that Clive isn't... The most expressive of persons. ]
[Clive's response has Joshua feel a small burn of embarrassment in return. He looks down shyly as he tries to reiterate his feelings.]
I know the two of us haven't had the most... conventional upbringing.
[With the strict hating mother, everyone they love dying, being separated for almost their entire adolescence and everything else...]
Yet, compared to you, you are still leagues ahead of me. Everyone here smiles at the very thought of you walking in to charm the room with your stoic expressions.
[ it's been a long day, for them both. clive more so than her, most likely, as he returns to the hideaway injured enough for tarja to take notice and herd him off to the medical room for some treatment and bandaging. jill doesn't manage to catch sight of him at first, only learning about this through the grape vine.
it's not uncommon for the goings ons of "cid" to be a popular topic amongst those inhabiting the hideaway, so it doesn't take long for her to be heading over there herself, boots clacking against the wooden flooring as she makes her way over.
from what she heard, tarja took care of him right away, but it doesn't prevent the myriad thoughts forming on her way over — the problem with getting the news through second-hand information is that nothing's clear. one person says he was holding his arm, another says he was limping. something about tarja "rushing" him to the medical bay, when really it could've been just a normal walk over. she'd best see for herself.
tarja having left to attend to an incident in the garden, jill is alone when she approaches the room meant for patients' recovery, and it's just as she's walking in that she nearly bumps right into... clive walking out. ]
—Clive? [ a step back in surprise, as her worried expression is replaced with suspicion. ] And where do you think you're going?
[ was he not just brought in here for an injury he sustained? speaking of which, she's scanning him for that now. ]
[ ooc: feel free to make his injury whatever suits you! i kept it vague for that purpose! ]
[ There's really no keeping anything secret when it involves his comings and goings it would seem. Clive takes a step back before there can actually be a collision. He almost winces, knowing full well that the gait in which Jill had used to get here meant that she had been seeking him out. In other words, someone had let slip that Tarja hadn't accepted "I'm fine" for an answer.
Clive tries to shift his weight ever so slightly. To cover for the fact he's been favoring one side over the other. The injury itself had been deeper than he'd like but nothing life threatening. Just a stray claw from a large coeurl. Right below the ribs. ]
In truth, I was considering a drink.
[ He's a terribly liar and can't possibly make a convincing lie so. Might as well be honest with that. ]
[ she's perceptive enough to watch the way he shifts his weight. does he think she doesn't spend every moment she can around him? she's quite well-versed in his mannerisms by now.
she places a hand on her hip, then, and gives him a smile. she knows he isn't lying — she can tell, with the way he's terrible at it — and thus she has the freedom to go along with it. ]
You were? Well, I'd be more than happy to fetch you one. What would you like?
[ is she still standing in the way? yes. because he's not getting around her so easily. ]
[ Oh he is aware that there is no one here that knows him better than Jill. No one that can read him like she does. Who knows what it is that he is thinking, even without speaking a word between them at times.
That's why he takes a deep breath and looks off to the side for a moment. Jill isn't fooled and he knows that this is a means to keep him contained, so to speak. If he ventures out then there's a good chance that someone will ask him to do an errand. Clive will be unable to refuse. ]
Am I allowed to at least go to my quarters?
[ An acknowledgement AND, well... Admitting defeat in a way. ]
[ she's not so cold that she'd disallow him from going to his own room, especially considering the comfort his room can provide that a small sickbed won't. privacy, as well, and the ability to busy himself with less active duties, like strategy or letter writing...
yeah, she'll allow it. ]
Of course. [ her voice softens, understanding clear in it, though her heart is still set on keeping him on-course to recover and not overexert himself. ]
I'll accompany you there, and we can get you a drink on the way.
[ finally stepping out of the way, she smiles and holds out her hand. ]
Shall we?
[ — she's not holding it out to steady him, but simply because she'd like to hold his. shh. ]
[ Depending upon the circumstances and the stakes at hand, Clive might have argued with Jill. There are many things to be done, many different operations all happening at the same time. Clive desires to handle most of them in person, despite being told otherwise. So he can't allow something like an injury slow him down.
On the other hand, he's not too keen on having that sort of argument right here. Not right now, considering that there are no pressing matters to attend to. Nothing with urgency that they need to act on. Thus it makes it more difficult to argue. He has no strong position. ]
Water, I take it? [ He slips his hand into hers without second thought. ] Regardless, let's.
[ Which means he is going to leave their little infirmary and head down the stairs. ]
[What has been only a small handful of days since Clive had returned alone from Origin has felt much, much longer than that. Jill was sure to give him some space when she thought he needed it, and was at his side every other time, but the longer time wore on, the more anxious she became. So anxious that she could no longer sit idly by and take it.
She wasn't sure how much convincing it would take for him to agree, but it would be the first day spent outside of the hideaway since. It might be healthy for the both of them to get some fresher air, and to separate themselves for a little while... to help ease their minds and if she's lucky, cheer him up. Even it is just a little bit.
She chose Northreach as her spot of choice, being quite fond of the marketplace there for their selections of foods and ingredients. Jill recalled their conversation here not that long ago, where they spoke of breads and pies, and she remembered that lighter feeling in her heart despite all of the heaviness that lingered otherwise at the time.
And this is hardly any different from then.
So, with two baskets in hand, she holds the larger one out for Clive to take with something of a crooked smile.]
Here. I'll need your help with carrying all of the supplies. I've plans to make some pies for everyone when we get back.
[ It doesn't take much convincing at all, really. If anything, Clive had seemed all to grateful for the suggestion. While people might have understood what the personal cost had been for him, he's not a man that knows how to handle their concern. His people - their people - are more of a family and Clive knows this. Realizes that the people of the hideaway mean well. Yet their glances... The way that they voice their concern.
So yes. He is more than all right with leaving the Hideaway for a day trip. To get some fresh air. Really there are only two individuals that likely could get him to actually breathe and take his mind off of the weight upon his shoulders. Gav had been helping Edda as of late, all but acting a proud uncle.
Though this is. Preferable, really. At least until the basket is handed to him. ]
Ah, I see. I am to be your pack chocobo, am I?
[ A light tease even as he plucks the basket from Jill's hands without any actual complaint. Clive doesn't actually mind it at all. ]
[She's at least able to smile at that, even laugh just a touch. It's the first time in days that it's been so easy to do so and even then...]
While a pack chocobo would be preferable for carrying our things, I doubt Ambrosia could help me pick out the best berries or meats as well as you could.
[Clever a bird as she is, she is not Clive.
Jill lifts her own basket and wiggles it in his direction, allowing her grin to reach her eyes. Lest he forget that she will be carrying things, too!]
What sorts of pies do you think everyone would like? I find myself torn between the sweeter and more savoury ones.
Hmm. Debatable. Ambrosia most certainly has a more discerning eye should it come to something such as berries.
[ He'll concede on the point about the meats. And really, hearing her laugh just the slightest bit eases some of the ache he has been experiencing the last couple of days. Enough so that his lip quirks into a smaller, barely there smile.
Still, Clive follows along obediently. His strides slow, to match Jill's. A part of him knows that this is for his own well being and he'll allow her this. ]
If a choice must be made between the two, I might be inclined to lean towards sweeter.
[ Since that is something rarer for the Hideaway and the people that live there. Sweets hadn't been a very high priority. ]
... Oh? [She casts him a glance over her shoulder, brows raised and eyes round with pleasant surprise.] My first guess would have been the savoury types. Meat pies and the like.
[Has Clive always been a fan of sweets? She wonders that, in the years they spent apart... Though it's unlikely he was able to indulge in any sort of thing at all, regardless of what it was. For her, it wasn't easy either. Stale breads truly make the magic of food fade after a while...
But she isn't here to think about that, so Jill is quick to shake the thought away.
She's going to keep the conversation moving, lest either one of them allow their thoughts to spiral back into places she's trying to keep them away from.]
I was thinking apple is a safe bet, but we could afford to take a few risks, I'm sure.
If you are asking me for my preference, it would lean towards meat pies. Since you made mention of the Hideaway, I thought more along the lines of what would be more of a treat for them.
[ No, no. Jill is correct in guessing what Clive would prefer. The thing is, Clive rarely thinks in the context of himself. Even when he had been asked about what sort of material he likes, he had stood there. Frozen with indecision.
His eyes follow the people moving about the area. Again, his thoughts stray back to the people he has known for the last five years or less. ]
Apples, hmm? Might be more beneficial to look for a different fruit.
[ "Another fine day" indeed. By 'another fine day' he means Clive being in a state of Limbo and fumbling around the Hideaway as people seem to go out of their way make him feel comfortable, right? Make him feel included. That's what we mean by "fine," here?
So, honestly, having the menace himself approach Clive out of nowhere and say hey we're going? Perfect. Gets him out of being unable to refuse anyone and their requests. ]
One that'll help get a few sods to a better place and land a good favour if we pull this off. Gav's already gone ahead to check things out, so we'll meet up with him there.
[And after waving to Otto who just shakes his head after glancing at Clive, Cid will start walking towards the entrance leading out of the Hideaway.]
[ Yeah, see. That's the problem right there. Otto is shaking his head. That means that something is up. Something is up and Clive is walking right into it.
